Headaches/Migraines Treatment

Headaches/Migraines Doctor in Murphy, Tx

Advanced adult & pediatric Headache/Migraines treatment

Almost everyone reading this article has experienced a headache. Most people may also be aware of the fact that there are various types of headaches, the symptoms of which range from a nagging ache to tension headache and severe pain, usually referred to as cluster headaches. Cluster headaches can last for weeks.

In this article, we’ll take a brief look at the most common types of headaches and a bit about what causes them in most cases. It is crucial to differentiate which headache subtype the patient is suffering from, as this will help choose an exact treatment plan. As such, treatment is individualized to each patient.

The different types of headaches

Although there are many classifications of headaches, as detailed below, there are mainly two broad sub-types of headaches, primary and secondary.

Primary headaches

Now, these types of headaches are caused when the issue is with the neck and head. These headaches will often develop due to chemical activity in the brain, tense muscles, nerve sensitivity, or maybe problems with the blood vessels.

Tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches are all forms of primary headaches. The most common of these are tension headaches experienced mostly by adults. Cluster headaches can be painful and usually occur for around 6-12 weeks and then slowly dissipating.

Migraines can cause a throbbing and intense pain that lasts for around 72 hours. Migraines can lead to people experiencing various symptoms like vomiting, nausea, sound, light, and smell sensitivity.

Secondary headaches

Secondary headaches are caused mainly by an underlying health issue, like having a concussion, medication overuse, or a sinus headache.

Other subtypes of headache include

Services

  • Migraines with and without Aura
  • Post Traumatic Headache
  • Tension Headache
  • Chronic Daily Headache
  • Exertional Headache
  • Cluster Headache
  • Hemicrania Continua
  • Paroxysmal Hemicrania
  • Hemiplegic Migraine
  • Medication Overuse Headache
  • Menstrual Headache

When To Visit a Neurologist If You Have a Headache?

Not every headache is necessarily a cause for concern. However, if you experience any of the symptoms below, then it is best to visit a neurologist:

  • Two or more headaches each week
  • A headache that’s so bad it is affecting your daily activity
  • Headache caused by a previous head injury
  • Headaches that don’t respond to over the counter medicine
  • Headaches that become worse over time

If you experience nausea, dizziness, vomiting, fever, and confusion, you need to visit a neurologist to determine what is causing it.

Headache Treatment

Most doctors will prescribe medication to relieve the headache. However, preventive medication may also be prescribed to deal with migraine and cluster headaches. The preventive medicines can relieve the severity as well as the frequency of the headaches.

Other treatments may include:

Nerve block

Since nerves are responsible for transmitting pain signals to the brain, the pain should stop by effectively blocking the nerves. When the brain does not receive these pain messages, the patient stops feeling the headache.

Nerve block usually entails injecting anesthesia into or near nerves, depending on the type of headache. An anti-inflammatory corticosteroid could be paired with anesthesia. The result is immediate relief from pain, which can last a few months.

Botox injections

Chronic migraine sufferers with 15 more of these headaches a month, with around eight of them being migraines, can benefit from Botox injections on a 12 weeks cycle. Botox helps reduce the severity and frequency of headaches. Come to our Neurology office in Murphy, Tx to get a concussion treatment program that’s right for you.

I was seen by Dr. Alshareef on a Teleneurology camera, his office staff helped me install the phone program in a few easy steps. It was a very organized visit in how he went through my medical problems one by one, and planned to meet monthly. He was so amazingly informative and help full. Thank you for all you did to help me.

An excellent center that genuinely cares about their patients. He made my dad feel comfortable after his stroke, and took out the time to make sure he understood the total impact and affect on his life, as well as how to compensate for it.

My niece suffered from seizure spells for a long time & she has been prescribed several seizure medications by many doctors but continued to have seizures despite everything. We almost lost hope until a friend of us referred us to Dr. Alshareef! Going there was the best decision we made. He was extremely kind and attentive. He spent a lot of time listening to us & trying to understand our problem. He stopped the old medications she was taking & started her on a new regimen & since then she had no seizures! & it’s her first 6 months without an episode. We are so grateful. God bless you!

Dr. Al-Shareef is a fabulous neurologist and an even better human being. He takes the time to listen to the patient (and her daughter!). He looks at the whole person and tailors care based on their specific circumstances. He’s reliable, dependable, trustworthy, knowledgeable, and, most importantly, he says it like it is. As a result of Dr Al-Shareef’s insight, my mother is off a bunch of medicines, safer (reduced balance issues means less falling), doing more, and happier. If I could rate him higher than 5 stars, I would.
