Advanced adult Multiple Sclerosis treatments
Multiple Sclerosis is a condition that can occur at any age, and it isn’t uncommon for people in their 30s to be diagnosed with it. However, early treatment can significantly impact the person’s quality of life and help keep symptoms at bay. If you are concerned about the often-common symptoms associated with Multiple Sclerosis like vision loss or weakness in the legs, it is essential to contact a doctor.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis is a term used for a neurodegenerative disease caused by the immune system attacking the myelin sheath covering the nerves. The myelin sheath works as a protective shield for the nerves and helps enhance electrical impulse transmission. However, when damaged, it can disrupt normal communication between the brain and the body. If not addressed, the immune system can destroy the nerves.
Multiple Sclerosis can occur at any time between the ages of 15 and 45, but it can even happen in older adults. On average, women are diagnosed when they are 29 years of age, and men are diagnosed at around 31 on average. However, women are at a 2x higher risk of developing the disease.
Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms
A patient’s symptoms will mainly depend on what nerves are affected by the disease and the extent of damage to the nerves.
The earliest symptoms in most patients have to do with their eyes. They will often experience:
- Complete or partial vision loss
- Double vision
- Pain when moving their eyes
- Inflamed optic nerve referred to as Optic Neuritis
A few other symptoms may include:
- Weakness or numbness of the limbs
- Pain and or tingling in various parts of the body
- Lack of coordination
- The sensation of an electric shock when moving the neck
- Fatigue
- Tremors and slurred speech
The majority of patients with the condition will also experience episodes of pain, which will then be followed by quiet periods of remission, which may last for either years or months. Around 70% of patients who experience this relapsing and remitting cycle will develop a steady progression of the symptoms referred to as secondary progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis – Treatment and Diagnosis
In addition to a complete neurological exam, various other diagnostic tests like a brain MRI and cerebrospinal fluid studies are done to confirm the diagnosis. Although there is currently no cure for Multiple Sclerosis, there are many medications that may be prescribed to speed up recovery from recurrent exacerbations of the disease, manage symptoms, and slow progression.
Patients may also benefit from physical therapy mainly to stretch and strengthen their muscles. A certified professional will mostly be in charge of the physical therapy program and follow-up sessions. Get a comprehensive treatment program at our Murphy, Tx Neurology Medical Clinic.
